Chapter Report (to be printed in The Language Teacher) Akita: September Guest speaker: Mark Cunningham Mark Cunningham gave a commercial presentation on three texts in the Picture Process Dictionary series: English for Everyday Activities (Lawrence J. Zwier), The English You Need for the Office (Susan Dean and Lawrence J. Zwier), and The English You Need for Business (Mark Cunningham and Lawrence J. Zwier), now available in Japan. The series texts are designed to be affordable and stress a simple and repeated visual process format for vocabulary development consisting of 15-20 illustrated frames of activities within a theme, such as "Taking Care of a Cat", "Dealing with Photocopier Problems", or "Getting Ready for a Presentation" Groups discussed advantages and drawbacks of using either the monolingual or bilingual captioned versions, as well as developing and listening to suggestions on communicative pair and groups activities using the texts. Vocabulary recognition and listening exercises in companion multiskills activity books were also demonstrated. Reported by Takeshi Suzuki
